Exploring the Types of Electrical Wiring in Your Commercial Building

The types of electrical wiring used in your commercial building are likely very different from systems put into homes. When it comes to commercial electric systems, there are different types of wiring to support large-scale electricity usage.

Commercial electrical wiring can be classified into three main subcategories, including conductors, busways, and cable assemblies. Let’s get into some of the different types of cable assemblies you can expect to find in your building:

  • Armored – One of the most common types of wiring used in commercial buildings is called the armored cable. These wires contain a metal sheath of aluminum or steel used as a ground path. Armored wire is typically used to branch circuit connections. These wires offer protection and durability.
  • Metal-clad – This cable is made up from a set of conductors assembled so the sheath is not used as a ground path. Able to be buried in wet locations, this type of wire is commonly used outdoors. Metal-clad cables resist corrosion, making them suitable for areas that experience moisture.
  • Nonmetallic – Typically used for indoor wiring circuits, such as outlets and lighting in commercial buildings, this type of wire is probably what you’re most familiar with. With a copper grounding conductor, this wire is known for its safety precautions.

Just because you have re-wired a light fixture or installed an outlet in your home does not mean you can safely take on a commercial building electrical project.
